Payroll Accounting Software -- Cheaper In The
Long Run
If you have employees then your company has the
task of accounting
for payrolls and producing the required reports to file with government
agencies. And, oh yes, getting employees paid too. This isn't a task
that is done manually very well, thus the need for payroll
accounting software.
If
your business is small, most of the standard accounting software
packages from Microsoft Office Accounting , Quicken or peachtree may be
just what you need. These systems include an integrated payroll module
that properly ties the payroll function to the General Ledger or Job
Costs records as appropriate.
But payroll accounting is often very complex.
Different regions have
different tax requirements and different reports required. Payroll can
be very difficult and complex. Some industries like contracting have
very special requirements. Contracting on government contracts require
"certified" payrolls with special reports filed.
For more complex accounting systems than the
out-of-the-box systems
many times have payroll modules tailored to a company requirements. Or
an accounting system may use certain standard functions integrated with
a custom payroll system. Several companies will handle this type of
custom payroll accounting software for your company
as a "turn key" system.
Another method for handling payroll is small
business payroll
services. The payroll is completely handled by an outside service
either handled online or by phone or fax. Your company provides the
inputs and the outside service takes care of the rest. You may need
fewer staff people in the accounting area with an outside service.
Advantages of handling payroll yourself rather
than using an outside
payroll service are several. Your own payroll software will probably be
cheaper over a period of time. With your own software, you can make
adjustments and changes easier and faster. You can choose software that
does just what you want instead of adapting to a standard payroll
service format.
Payroll accounting software is
a key part of the accounting
system. A standard out-of-the-box accounting system may be all you need
for all your accounting needs. If you have special requirements,
several companies can provide a standard system to meet your
requirements or you can get a custom system to do what you need.
